When Warren Buffett was asked at this year’s Berkshire Annual General meeting what up and coming investors should study, he replied,
“You don’t have to study anyone new. Just study Tom Murphy and Don Keough. If you learned the lessons of Tom Murphy, you don’t need to learn any other lessons.”
Whitney Tilson was kind enough to dig out this interview with Tom Murphy – given in 2000.
One quote:
“I’m seventy-five years old now—you recognize that the only thing that’s important is your family and your friends. Business is just a way to live your life so that you can have a nice life for your family and make good friends. The greatest blessing in the world, outside of being an American, is to have good health. To be blessed with good health is a great luxury. Fortunately, I’ve had that for many, many years. To be a workaholic never appealed to me. My wife and my four children and now my grandchildren are the most important things in my life. I think that’s the way life should be.”
