Long Live the Shameless Cloners

May 30, 2025

In the early 2000’s Mohnish Pabrai became the first person the investment world to talk openly about an uncomfortable truth.

Many investment managers – who claimed to be original thinkers were actually just copying other investors that they admired. It was almost as if they felt slightly ashamed about it – and even, perhaps, tried to deny it. The worst of all were the closet indexers. Those investors did not even bother with copying investors – they simply mimicked the S&P.
But Pabrai did not decry the practice, he lauded it. He coined the term, “Shameless Cloner”. He was the first to realize and say publicly that copying the best ideas of the best investors may be the smartest thing that one can do in the stock market. And there have never been more cloning resources available for investors who are just starting out on their journey.Mani Suriya R has done a excellent job of creating a good starting point. Mani – I am proud to be mentioned in such August company – thank you. Here are a few other resources that I can highly recommend. Here are some newsletter writers and investor communites that I follow: MOI Global (John Mihaljevic), David Diranko (Contrarian Cashflows) , Chris Waller (Plural Investing), Rajani Sinha and Sachin Gupta (CareEdge Group), Robert Karas (Bank Gutmann), Matthew Warder (the Coal Trader). These are just a few. There are others that I could mention.

Bottom line is this: There is more access to information than ever before. And that access is only enhanced by AI.

Times could not be better for shameless cloners.

Long live the shameless cloners!
